Questions

Planing, slabs and lumber in London, Ontario

The questions woodworkers ask us most. Don't see yours? Ask us.

Planing, sanding & flattening

How much does wood planing cost?

We charge by machine time:

Wood: $5 per minute, with a $40 minimum charge.
Epoxy and resin: $8 per minute, with a $60 minimum charge.

Want a ballpark first? Send us the dimensions and wood type through our contact page or at cole@workerswood.ca, and we'll give you an estimate.

How long does planing take?

It depends on the size of the job. Send us the dimensions and wood type, and we'll give you a timeline along with your quote.

How wide can you plane and sand?

Our wide planer and wide belt sander takes material up to 52 inches wide and 20 feet long. That covers most dining table tops, live edge slabs, countertops and bar tops in one pass across the width.

How wide a slab can you flatten?

Slabs up to 52 inches wide and 20 feet long go through our wide belt machine. Working with something bigger? Send us the dimensions and we'll tell you what we can do.

What's the difference between planing, sanding and slab flattening?

Flattening takes out the cup, twist and bow so a slab sits true. Planing (thicknessing) brings a board or slab to an even thickness. Sanding cleans up the surface so it's ready for stain or finish.

Most slabs that have moved while drying or in storage need all three before you can build with them. More on slab flattening.

Can you plane and sand an epoxy river table?

Yes. Epoxy and resin tables go through our wide belt sander just like solid wood, so you get one flat, even surface across the wood and the pour. Epoxy work is $8 per minute of machine time, with a $60 minimum.

Can you plane reclaimed or rough-sawn wood?

Yes. We plane rough-sawn lumber, air-dried slabs and reclaimed wood. Let us know it's reclaimed when you get in touch, and send the dimensions and wood type.

How do I bring in wood for planing?

Get in touch first with the dimensions and wood type. If you're not sure your piece can be planed, that's the time to ask. We'll confirm we can take it, give you a quote and set up a time to drop it off at our shop in London, Ontario. More on planing and sanding.

Can you cut wood to size?

Yes. Tell us the sizes you need and we'll cut your lumber, slabs or panels to suit, so they're ready for glue-up. Send your cut list through our contact page.

Slabs, lumber & table tops

Where can I buy live edge slabs in London, Ontario?

Right here. We stock live edge black walnut, maple, white oak and ash slabs, with a focus on large Ontario black walnut, book-matched sets and burl. Many are wide enough for a single-slab dining table. Slabs come rough sawn or planed and flattened.

Stock changes often. See the slabs we have now.

Where can I buy black walnut lumber in Ontario?

We carry furniture-grade black walnut, white oak, hard maple, wormy maple and white ash, plus other Ontario hardwoods as they come in. Dimensional lumber is available in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4 and 10/4. See our lumber.

What do 4/4 and 8/4 mean?

Hardwood thickness is measured in quarters of an inch when it's rough sawn. 4/4 ("four quarter") is about 1 inch thick, 6/4 is about 1½ inches and 8/4 is about 2 inches. Planing takes a little off, so finished boards come out thinner than the rough number.

Is your lumber kiln dried?

Yes. Our lumber is kiln dried and ready for the shop.

Do you sell unfinished table tops and countertops?

Yes. Our table tops and DIY countertops are solid hardwood, sanded and ready for you to stain and finish your way. We also sell steel C-channel to keep a solid top flat on its base. The current lead time is listed on each product page.

Do you sell to hobbyists, or only to trade?

Everyone. Whether you're a weekend woodworker or run a small shop, you can buy wood and book shop services with us.

Do you ship across Canada?

Yes. Live edge slabs ship anywhere in Canada for a flat $150. Shipping on other items is shown at checkout or quoted with your order.
